Career Spotlight

Dr Daniel Backhouse

What does a typical day look like for you?:

I work from my desk most days, but I have also been involved in the work at our combustion research facility, and attend/present at industry events and conferences. My desk work involves a variety of different tasks which can change week-to-week. Some examples are: project management work (updating finances, submitting reports, flagging potential issues, responding to requests from partners, etc); supporting bid-writing activities; providing technical input to projects (answering questions, data analysis, economic modelling, reviewing reports, experimental design); Chairing the Technical Strategy Working Group (drafting and circulating agendas, taking meeting notes, circulating actions); developing knowledge (technical reading, attending webinars, providing training to colleagues, etc).

What do you like most about your role?:

I really enjoy learning about new science and technology, as well as providing technical expertise. Site visits are a lot of fun too!

How or why did you come to work at Glass Futures?:

I joined in June 2021, after working at Sheffield Hallam University, where I was involved with several projects that GTS, and more specifically, Rob Ireson, were leading. I was hearing a lot about Glass Futures; it sounded like a fantastic opportunity, and I was looking for a change in job, so I applied. I'm still happy with my decision!

What do you enjoy most about working at Glass Futures?:

It's a combination of the work that I do, particularly in the technical areas, the people here, and getting to be involved in such an amazing vision.
