About our opportunities:

As the organisation grows, we have identified the need for additional expertise in our R&D Projects team. As a result, we are now recruiting for an experienced Data Scientist, to lead data acquisition and analysis activities across a number of key R&D projects and a Data Engineer, to aid in the integration, consolidation and cleansing of data whilst structuring and organising data for use in specific analytics applications.
Both roles provide a significant contribution to the Glass Futures team in helping to deliver innovative technologies that will play a vital part in helping to decarbonise the global glass manufacturing sector.

These roles provide a unique opportunity to work for leading global manufacturers and internationally recognised brands on projects, working across commercial glass plants, test facilities and the new Global Centre of Excellence facility at St Helens, due to open in 2023.

The roles will involve working closely the wider Engineering team to set up instrumentation and data collection systems. As such, an ability to understand complex industrial processes and develop strategies for gathering and analysing data is vital. Experience of data analysis using AI/ML applications on cloud based platforms such as MindSphere.

It is essential that interested parties are motivated by Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths and have the ability to provide practical support within an industrial environment. Glass or ceramics sector experience is advantageous for this role due to the nature of the business and projects; however, we are also eager to hear from exceptional alternative industry experienced candidates with demonstrable transferable skills.

Given the project-based nature of the work you may be expected to spend short periods of time away from home and are also expected to cover occasional shift work, with the possibly of the role transferring to permanent shifts in mid-2023 subject to negotiation.

There will be opportunities to get involved in other areas of the business, including project management, business development and practical engineering research.

About you:

We are looking for experienced Data & Software specialists with the following attributes:

  • MSc/ PhD in Science, Maths, Computing or Engineering is highly desirable.
  • Experience of collecting and processing large volumes of data from a range of sources in an industrial environment, with the ability to pick out key signals/data from background noise
  • Experience in integrating data collection and SCADA systems into MindSphere, Microsoft Azure or equivalent Cloud-based data management platforms
  • An aptitude to understand, compare and deploy new software and analytical techniques
  • Industrial manufacturing experience is very desirable.
  • Competent with using Excel to perform complex data processing operations
  • Experience in Project Management of R&D projects is desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with adaptability for peers, stakeholder, and international communications.
  • A proactive person with a drive to succeed and show up without daily direct supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Innovative thinker with an ability to identify, assess and propose problem solutions.
  • Has a great awareness, understanding and respect for health and safety, preferably with a supporting vocational qualification, e.g., IOSH.
  • Experience in software development and programming is desirable
  • Flexibility in working hours to collaborate internationally, and willingness to travel overseas for short term, fixed periods.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Working with the engineering team to design, install and integrate instrumentation and SCADA systems into Cloud-based platforms
  • Engaging with industrial engineers, project managers and technical R&D teams to understand needs and requirements
  • Performing complex data analysis and interpretation of results
  • Management of small projects and work packages within larger projects
  • Develop and communicate project objectives, reviewing project proposals and plans.
  • Data analysis and report writing, including written, oral, actual, and virtual communication and demonstration.
  • Ability to recommend actions and determine outputs, summarising information, and trends.
  • Close liaison with the glass fraternity team in disseminating project specific findings and recommendations.
  • Generate innovative ideas and work with business development team to identify new opportunities for R&D funding

The Particular’s:

Salary: Range between £38,000 – 48,000 dependent upon specific role, skills & experience
Hours: Full time with flexible working considerations – (Shift work expected for fixed periods during various times in the year)
Location: Hybrid working inc. Home – Travel expected during periods of work – Primarily based in St Helens from 2023 onwards.
